It’s a solid pick for a ratcheting screwdriver. I can use it for just about any of my household fastening needs. It has many different bit sizes and all wrenches too.

Now that I have succeeded with my first green screen video, I’m dreaming up new crazy ideas on how to present cool stuff and my office is now looking a bit different with a green sheet hooked to the ceiling.
The possibilities with a green screen are only limited to your imagination. Go for it!
For example, I wanted to figure out how to put my head as a pop-up in the bottom corner of a video using a green screen. It’s a little more complicated… But success!

All this learning with video editing reminds me of the Project Management term, “Progressive Elaboration”.
It’s the iterative process of advancing by continually improving upon each fundamental gain in knowledge through the progressive nature of a project. Progress is made by building upon what has been learned with each iteration. This same concept applies to life, raising kids, and even my learnings with iMove. It’s rare you get it all right the first time!
Many times you will take one step forward to take two steps back, but that is all normal. For projects the gradual progression will lead to refining project estimates for such items as scope, time, and cost. As your project team learns through progressive elaboration any issues will be prevented or you will catch the issues sooner and/or fix them much faster.
I’m tinkering around in iMovie. It’s a bit tricky to learn! With everything technical, I find the best and fastest way to learn is to just jump-in and start clicking around through trial and error.
If all else fails then I seek instructional videos on YouTube.

For my project managers out there…. Even in the olden days there were project managers… The only difference was everyone was a project manager! It was a way of life. You did everything back then! From farming to ranching to managing the homestead… And they didn’t have the internet as a helpful resource!
How did they do it?
They had to learn through trial and error and they worked hard! They also had strong connections to their family and community to learn from. When something didn’t work, the consequences were they didn’t eat. Being hungry makes you learn real quick!
Agile methodologies are based on the same principals. For example, each iteration or sprint ends with a retrospective. The team shares what went well and what not so well. Reinforcing good practices and learning makes the overall team do better the next time.
The year was 2005… A fun Summer visit to Arnold, California at the local swimming pond with the kids. Nothing special about the day until this happened! 14 years later It’s a memory etched in my brain as if it happened yesterday.
We all have them… Those random memories… Each one doesn’t necessarily have to be a huge event, but just a moment in time that has managed to just stick. Why this John!?
The reason why is because kissing this frog totally ties together Project Management with being just a cool Dad, even if it’s just for a fleeting moment in time. There is a convergence here and I’ll explain.
Firstly… I must admit, this was pretty cool. It’s one of the few times I reached “rock star” status in my life. Imagine this… Kids swimming all over the place and you suddenly show up with a live bullfrog. The whole beach full of kids catches wind of the news like a bolt of lightening and instantly swarm me to see the bullfrog. I was famous!

Just look at her! My Daughter Nicole’s eyes just laser focused on that bullfrog. I had a captive audience! What else could I do to keep the crowd’s attention? Yes you guessed it. I kissed that frog!
So how does this one tie into project management? Hey kids don’t tune-out! Rumor has it that some of my kids are skipping this learning part of my blog. Pay attention kiddos!
The Frog is the end product! It’s the prize after thinking and planning in advance! Cool things don’t come without some work and advance planning. That’s where Project Management comes into play!
The frog isn’t just sitting there waiting at the waters edge to be picked-up. You first have to think of the idea (I want to catch a frog) and then in advance think about how to catch a frog and what tools you need. You have to develop your project plan.
“Operation to Catch a Bull Frog” Before you go to the swimming pond you must have the plan already in place. This is on top of the gazillion other things you need to remember to bring for swimming for a family of 7 to happen successfully!
Then you must execute the plan and it will take some practice. Prior to this big day I scoped the area out. I tried to catch a frog, but those suckers are quick. In order to be successful I had to procure a net and remember my tennis shoes so I can be quick at my feet.
Managing real life projects at work happen in similar ways. You have to think of an idea first and create a vision and then plan and execute. It doesn’t happen overnight either.
By the way… I think some luck was involved in catching that frog because for the last 14 years I’ve tried to catch another bull frog. I’ve been skunked ever since!

Firstly, my simple request was for 2 of my 5 daughters (Kylie and Kenzie) to create a video while on their sister outing in Chico to best present this new radical idea of “Hammock’ing”
This is a new recreational activity called, “Hammock’ing and it’s going to catch on fire and go viral! I wanted them to demonstrate in the video what exactly this is in less than 1 minutes, because I know most people’s attention span is not much more than that.
I think they delivered!!! It’s not only entertaining, but meets my requirements.
This is exactly what a Project Manager does. He/She comes up with a vision or idea then triggers action of Subject Matter Experts (SME) and then works to execute. PM’s typically work with stakeholders to define the requirements and then coordinates with a project team to deliver. In this case, my SME’s are Kenzie and Kylie. The original cut was over 2 minutes. I worked with Kenzie to scale it down a bit. We had some issues with deciding what to cut out and I had to negotiate a bit to determine what was acceptable to her to drop vs. leave in. She did get a bit frustrated with me, but I think the end product turned out better. Having those sensitive (crucial conversations) with your SME’s is essential to deliver the best product possible.
I hope this delights my customers… This is another project management term. A key goal of any project manager is to delight. I hope this did it’s job!

Anything and everything that I can possibly forget is in my iPhone Notes. You can also easily categorize into folders and search for key words.
Here are some typical entries into my Notes:

The birthday’s of all my kids (They ask me and I get in trouble if I can’t remember)
The date I installed my water heater and a picture of it with model info (Or anything you buy of significance)
Car repair, model, etc. information… (Just make a note of when you last changed the oil, so 3 month’s down the road… you can recall it)
For the guys (Put the size shoe, ring finger size, outfit size) of your wife… so when you go to order something… you have it handy
A NOTE about security! — You need to secure your phone with a strong password! And there is a extra feature to require an additional password for your notes. It’s Important to really lock tight your private information on your phone!
To my Project Managers: It’s all about speed to access the information… There are tools out there to Scale-up your use of notes… Can you use Notes on your Iphone for managing projects? Yes…. HOWEVER… If you manage large scale projects like me… A simple notes app on your phone is not powerful enough and not scalable enough. My tool of choice, “OneNote”
What is my Vision: To build a Community of Family and Friends that are actually connected and share each other’s lives! I want to entertain while also sharing tips that make life better and more fulfilling and I want to share my project management knowledge to make life run more smoothly for everyone. At 48 years of age and getting married to my beautiful wife 15 years ago and blending a family of 5 girls has created a TON of content. I honestly should have started this 15 years ago, but now that I’m nearly a empty nester…. I have time to write the stories down. I could write a book! But instead of that… I’ll blog it.
Also I have a passion for project management! My family would say… ewww… that’s boring, but I firmly believe that part of the Michaels Bunch success (The secret sauce) was applying project management methodology to the family unit.
